In 1964, the palace released a statement declaring that Crown Prince Harald would not marry a commoner. Norwegian Prime Minister Einar Gerhardsen also warned that allowing the marriage could destabilize the monarchy.
Determined to be with Sonja, Harald gave his father an ultimatum: he would either marry her or remain single for life. The pressure was immense, as the crown prince’s refusal to marry would threaten the royal line of succession.
After years of resistance, King Olav finally relented in 1968, granting the couple his blessing. They were married at Oslo Cathedral on August 29, 1968, with King Olav walking Sonja down the aisle.
The series stars Gina Bernhoft Gørvell as Sonja and Sindre Strand Offerdal as Harald. Anders Baasmo will play King Olav, showcasing his role in shaping the couple’s future.
